June 4 to 14, 2008 on the Ring of Tohu*
The students Annual Show, presented at TOHU from June 4 to 14, has become a favorite pre-summer solstice ritual! Stage centre: Aspiring circus artists, coming from the four corners of the world to train in Montreal at this internationally renowned school. Staged by directors Peter James and Johanne Madore, this two-part spectacle showcases the very best in contemporary circus.

Sixteen graduates of the college-level training program will take to the ring to perform their numbers. It's an opportunity marvel at the mastery displayed by these young artists as they prepare to move on to a new life as professionals in the world's biggest circus rings and on major stages. Hand-to-hand, trapeze, contortion, tightrope, juggling, balancing, and the German Wheel are just some of the disciplines on view! Undergraduate students of the college program will also participate in the Show: Those in the second year will act as performers along with the graduates, while first-year students enliven the site with off-stage animation under the direction of Alain Francoeur.

One Show, Two Works

In Les feuilles mortes (Dead Leaves), Peter James derives inspiration from the songs of Yves Montand, drawing from their poetry to tell a love story. It unfolds in the centre ring, told by characters in search of the absolute, with all the clamor, fury, rage and madness, a cry that affirms their existence. It's also about the singular human children who tell these stories of fear and darkness, light and life.

Les Mandalas du désir (Mandalas of Desire) by Johanne Madore throws the spotlight on a mathematician who attempts to create an equation for desire. He analyzes the gravitational force and collisions of atoms "in love," observing the chance meetings of stellar bodies, some somnolent types, and a particularly mischievous trickster.
